If there is any reason to be a road geek, it's this stretch of road.

This road, while not the longest US highway in the nation (a distinction that, to this day, actually belongs to US 6, which runs from Bishop, California to Provincetown, Massachusetts), once was considered the Mother Road, and many still call it that. Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll probably also note it as one of the most famous stretches of highway.

There isn't much of it left, and much of what is here is kept for landmark value - though it's largely unmaintained.

This portion from here on out is a portion that leads from Victorville to Oro Grande. Further North would take us to Helendale.

From what I understand, it was at this rail crossing in Oro Grande that Sammy Davis Jr. actually lost an eye.

Down in Cajon Pass, near Devore, California. Continuing to my right in the last shot is the old road; the road to the left is untraversable and walled off.
