<br>"Yes, Sir," O'Neill replied sharply. It wouldn't be any different to the last few days anyway. Those on base who knew how to look after a kid didn't really care or were scared off by Daniel's inability to trust them. <br>
<br>When the General left, Jack crouched in front of Daniel, not holding his hand so that Daniel could withdraw his whenever he wanted. "How about icecream and jello in the commissary?"<br><br>Daniel nodded. Jack imagined for a moment that he saw a smile but then it was gone. Daniel didn't smile at people. He only smiled to himself over his work. <br>
<br><br>Part 10<br>by Peja<br><br><br>Jack was happy.<br><br>Oh, not the I'm on top of the world, ecstatic, ride the bullet happy. He doubted that he would ever have that again. That had gone to heaven to live with his lost son. <br>
<br>But he was a kind of all is right with the world, plaster over the gaping cannonball hole where his heart used to live kind of happy. A happy that promised there was a reason to get up in the morning again. Someone needed him. <br>
<br>It was a good kind of happy. A happy that brought a smile to his face and a softly hummed song to his lips. Young Daniel's song.<br><br>So here he was, humming softly, while he made up the the cot he had demanded be delivered on the spot, no he would not wait until the morning. He had a boy who needed a bed tonight, dammit, <br>
<br>Young Daniel made a point to ignore his presence, but the sidelong glances let Jack know Daniel may not show his awareness, but the youngster knew he was there. And when Jack launched into the third rendition of the tuneless melody, Daniel added his soft voice in harmony.<br>
<br>for Jack, it was enough. The childless father had a fatherless child. Yeah, it was enough to build on<br><br>[hope this made some sort of sense. Its 3:30 in the morning and my head is not what I would call focused.]<br>
