by Teddy & Peja

Part 5
by Teddy

"Airman, why is this boy up at this hour of the night? Where is Dr Langford?" Jack asked.

"Dr Langford has gone home for the night, Sir. Civilians are not allowed to stay overnight without special permission," the Airman told him.

"And why didn't she take the boy?"

"Because he isn't allowed off the base, Sir."

"Who is minding him?"

"I don't know, Sir," the Airman replied.

Jack crouched down to Daniel's level. "Time for you to be in bed. Do you understand?"

Daniel just kept rocking and humming. Suddenly Jack realised he knew the tune. It was something the children sang in parts of the near east. He'd heard it often when he was stationed at different bases. He began singing it quietly in English. Daniel responded but not in English. "Well, now. You are full of surprises."

Daniel reached out and touched the patch on Jack's uniform. As he continued singing Jack stood up and held out his hand for Daniel's who stood up as well but didn't take his hand. He followed Jack back to the room he'd been assigned. His bed was roughly made with a stuffed toy in the place where Daniel should have been. Jack pulled back the cover. Daniel hopped in without a fuss. "Lights out," Daniel said, without looking at Jack. He rolled away from him and closed his eyes.

"That's right, lights out," Jack responded.

Part 6
by PEJA

Jack closed the boy's file and leaned back from his desk, pinching the bridge of his nose against the ache that had lodge firmly behind his eyes. The boy...Daniel..had gotten a rotten start. No doubt about it. Seeing his parents killed in a freak accident, crushed by a huge tablet.

Then sent to one home after another until he finally landed in the institution that specialized in bad care for the disabled. He'd been cataloged as nonredeemable. Collateral damage, to be housed until he was eighteen then dropped through the cracks. One more of the lost souls wandering the planet with no one and nothing.

Being brought here by Langford, while a possible step up, wasn't much better. The boy was government property. No rights. A piece of meat, a thinking machine in a flesh form. Useful only as long as he had the answers the government wanted.

How much of what was happening to him did young Daniel actually comprehend, Jack wondered, shuddering. Small wonder the boy was withdrawn.

end part 6

Anyone wanna take the next part?
Anyone reading?
