Well, it was intended as a story idea, not necessarily for factual purposes. Kind of like the story that Morihei Uyeshiba (founder of Aikido) was able to dodge bullets at the age of 60+ or so--a really good yarn, but not really to be taken as fact.

Because bandits are NOT "Enemy Combatants"?

I don't know what the Italian Army's rules of engagement are, but I remember historically soldiers being given stupid RoE (Rules of Engagement) that put them at a disadvantage when confronted with a threat. Case in point: USMC troops (in Beirut, I think, 1982) were told not to put ammunition in their M16s because "it would send the wrong message" to the populace. Result: BOOM.

Rules of engagement are dictated by politics, not actual military conditions. In some cases it's beneficial, in others it's harmful.

This is -probably- why PMCs are often found to be overly trigger happy--since they're technically -civilian- contractors, they're not beholden to rules that keep the military from overstepping their boundaries.

But I digress--before this gets too far off-topic.
