Actually I'll have to disagree with you here.  There were hints  throughout 
the series that Snape had a crush on Lily.  For a long time I  actually thought 
the 'love' that would defeat Voldemort was Snape's love for  Lily...i.e. his 
betrayal of Voldemort.  I agree with the rest of what you  said, but while I 
don't see Snape as any sort of hero, his feelings towards Lily  were not out of 
left field.
 
 

Then  this whole random Snape loving lily thing and turning him into a hero
in  the end. Yeah, some yahoo that picks on and humiliates 11 year olds is  a
real effing hero. It's pretty obvious what happened. People are  confusing
Snape with Alan Rickman and pushing her to make him more  palatable. Certain
people just can't stand the idea that there ARE people  that are distasteful,
vindictive, and mean, and that they aren't secretly  heros that are just
waiting for a chance to show how misunderstood they  are. It's pure bollocks
what she did with  Snape.
