There is a third reaction: the fanfic reader and writer's reaction.  
This is the reaction of someone who's seen HP fandom in all its glory.

"You mean that's it?  Dumbledore's gay?  Meh.  I've seen Harry get 
together with everyone except maybe Firenze, and that's probably because 
I didn't look hard enough.  Call me when there's a REAL revelation."

Then, of course, there's one more reaction.  There are a few writers who 
are probably jumping up and down and saying, "See?  See?!?  I told you so!"

That fertile ground's been planted for many a year, now.  The only
