Note: This chapter was originally supposed to be part of chapter 7.
But, since I've been trying really
hard not to drag my chapters out so they take on unmanageable
dimensions, I broke it into two chapters.
Some of the obvious errors resulted from a certain degree of continuity
problems.

It works both ways. I checked all this with my daughter-in-law. She
raises and trains show horses for a living.
Horses only see in black and white. To them, a wall of smoke is a real
wall. Hence, they are reluctant to go INTO
a smoke-filled barn, but can be led OUT with less trouble. Throwing
something over their eyes (or their whole face, if possible),
makes them rely on the human controlling them. If properly trained,
they will follow the human's instructions - despite
being nervous. Breathing all that smoke, however, really pegs the old
panic meter. That's why I made the transition from smoky hallway
to clear convention floor fairly quick. The horse is still spooked but
controllable.
I learned a lot about basic horse psychology and the various stages of
discomfort the horse can go through. Considering these animals are
really prey for carnivores in the wild, they have a pretty complex set
of fear stages.
One thing about jumping. The horse only jumps if IT wants to jump. The
rider can only set the gate to what the horse is comfortable with,
making sure that it's rear hooves hit the ground at just the right point
where the horse would place them should it want to jump the obstacle.
If a trained horse sees what it expects to see, it will usually jump -
but not always. Those results are strictly for the blooper reel. All
it takes is for one factor to be out of place and the horse's natural
caution will cause it to balk. Tina picked a horse that was apparently
well trained. With her cross country experience, she hit her mark and
the horse jumped as it should.
